The Waterford Crystal Cuts


Olive Cut

  • The cutter carves out an oval in the crystal.
  • Made in the glass using the smooth side of a carved wheel.
  • This cut can be clearly seen in Colleen.

Flat Cuts

  • Most commonly found on the stems of glasses and necks of decanters.
  • Also known as the Rheintour cut.
  • An example of this cut can be seen on Grafton Street.

Wedge Cut

  • This cut is applied using diamond tipped wheels.
  • Varying them in length and width creates many patterns
  • Lismore is the classic example of wedge cutting.

Rosette

  • This is a combination of three or more cuts.
  • The first cut is placed on the crystal in a vertical or horizontal position.
  • A number of cuts are then added to form the fan.

Fine Diamonds

  • A series of closely cut symmetrical lines arranged to give a diamond-like appearance.
  • Example of this cut can be seen on Alana

Blaze

  • This cut is a contribution of leaf cuts places around the piece that can be either equal or unequal in length.
  • Equal cuts can be seen on Maeve.
  • Mourne has unequal blaze cuts.
